Ghostbusters returns with a new team of four women played by Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones. Rather than continuing the original story, the 2016 film reimagines the premise in a separate continuity, replacing the earlier team with new characters while retaining the ghosts, equipment, comedy, and familiar imagery associated with the series.
The all-female team gives the film a contemporary identity. The characters are not presented as unusual simply because they work as scientists and ghost hunters; they are allowed to be eccentric, capable, awkward, and funny in their own ways. That approach suits a period in which old assumptions about which occupations belong to men or women have increasingly lost their force.
Kate McKinnon is especially memorable as Jillian Holtzmann. Her performance does not fit neatly into conventional expectations of how a female character should behave. With her strange movements, unpredictable expressions, and complete confidence in her inventions, she creates a comic presence that feels entirely her own.
The film also benefits from its connection to the 1984 original. Familiar actors appear in new roles, while recognizable equipment, ghosts, music, and visual references give longtime viewers plenty to notice. Released 32 years after the first film, it works less as a delayed sequel than as a new comic interpretation of the same basic idea.
The closing credits return to the famous “Ghostbusters” theme in newly recorded versions rather than simply ending with the original Ray Parker Jr. recording. That musical connection helps the film finish on an appropriately playful and nostalgic note.
Ghostbusters may be built from a familiar property, but it succeeds best when its new cast is allowed to establish its own comic rhythm. For viewers disappointed by other comedy revivals of the same period, including Zoolander 2, this energetic reworking may offer a more satisfying return to an older comic favorite.
