You’re Being Summoned, Azazel-san is the kind of anime that earns its appeal by being consistently ridiculous. Its crude humor and adult content will not suit everyone, but both are central to its comic identity. For viewers comfortable with that style, it offers plenty of opportunities to laugh. The first television season began airing in Japan in April 2011.
The story revolves around a detective agency where demons are summoned and forced to assist with human problems. Instead of appearing as majestic or terrifying supernatural beings, the demons often arrive in small, comical forms and behave in thoroughly undignified ways. The contrast between their supposedly fearsome identities and their actual behavior provides much of the humor.
Yet the series does not invent its demons entirely from scratch. Their names, powers, and personalities draw on traits associated with demons found in mythology and demonology, even though those elements are heavily distorted for comedy. This gives the anime an amusing double identity: the characters look absurd, but their supernatural backgrounds are not completely arbitrary.
Above all, the series succeeds as an adult gag comedy. It is loud, vulgar, strange, and deliberately inappropriate, but it knows how to turn demonic mythology into something unexpectedly silly. Its strongest quality is simple: it is capable of producing a great deal of laughter.
