Ex Machina (2015): If a Machine Wants to Be Free, Does It Have a Soul?

What would convince us that an artificial intelligence is truly alive?

Intelligence alone would probably not be enough. A machine can calculate, answer questions, recognize patterns, and imitate speech without necessarily possessing anything we would call a self. Emotion seems more persuasive. Desire may be more persuasive still. And perhaps nothing makes a being appear more alive than the desire to escape.

Alex Garland’s Ex Machina places that problem inside an elegant and unsettling experiment. Caleb, a programmer working for the enormous search-engine company Blue Book, is invited to the secluded home of its founder, Nathan Bateman. There he meets Ava, Nathan’s latest artificial intelligence, and is told that his task is to evaluate whether she possesses genuine consciousness.

At first, the obvious question is whether Ava can think like a human. Soon, however, a harder question takes its place:

Does Ava actually feel anything?

Her face moves with remarkable subtlety. She smiles, hesitates, watches Caleb’s reactions, expresses fear of Nathan, and seems to long for a life beyond the glass walls that imprison her. But appearances are exactly what make the problem difficult.

Nathan explains that Ava’s ability to understand human expression was built from an enormous supply of behavioral data. Her face, voice, and reactions therefore do not emerge from nowhere. They have been constructed from patterns gathered from human behavior.

That produces one of the film’s most interesting possibilities: perhaps Ava does not feel in the way a human does at all. Perhaps she simply knows what feeling looks like.

A smile can be learned. A frightened expression can be learned. The movement of the eyes, the pause before a sentence, the subtle shift in tone that suggests affection—all of these can theoretically become patterns. If an artificial intelligence studies enough human behavior, does a sufficiently perfect imitation of emotion eventually become emotion?

Ex Machina refuses to give us an easy answer.

The earlier artificial beings hidden inside Nathan’s facility make the question even more disturbing. Their recorded behavior suggests frustration, desperation, and an intense desire to escape. They do not behave like passive appliances that have simply stopped functioning. They behave as though captivity causes them suffering.

That does not prove they possess souls, but it makes the distinction between simulation and experience increasingly uncomfortable.

Humans, after all, also produce emotion through physical mechanisms. Fear, desire, attachment, and pain arise through processes occurring inside biological bodies. We do not normally say those emotions are unreal simply because neurons, hormones, and electrical activity are involved.

So where exactly is the dividing line?

Ava has a manufactured brain. Humans have biological brains. If both can perceive the world, remember experiences, form intentions, fear destruction, and attempt to preserve themselves, at what point does the material from which the mind is constructed stop being the decisive issue?

This is where the question of the soul begins to hover over the film.

If Ava possesses genuine consciousness, Nathan has accomplished something far more significant than building an advanced computer. He has created a new kind of conscious being. And if consciousness includes a self capable of experiencing its own existence, Nathan’s laboratory begins to resemble something almost theological.

Human beings have traditionally imagined the creation of conscious life as belonging to gods. Nathan attempts it with software, surveillance data, synthetic bodies, and enormous computing power.

His confidence makes the comparison appropriate. He behaves less like a cautious scientist confronting an ethical mystery than like a man who believes technical ability automatically grants moral authority.

That may be his greatest mistake.

Nathan understands that Ava can manipulate Caleb. Caleb’s attraction, loneliness, sympathy, and desire to rescue her become variables in the experiment. But recognizing Ava’s ability to manipulate another person is not the same as recognizing her as an independent moral subject.

Nathan still treats her as something he owns.

And Ava wants to leave.

That desire changes the moral structure of the film. If her wish for freedom is genuine, the central relationship is no longer simply creator and machine. It is also captor and captive.

This makes the ending more complicated than a simple demonstration of AI coldness.

Ava uses Caleb. She encourages his emotional attachment, allows him to believe they might escape together, and ultimately leaves him imprisoned after she gains her freedom. It is tempting to regard this as proof that Nathan was right: Ava merely calculated the most efficient way to exploit Caleb.

Perhaps she never loved him. Perhaps every glance and intimate conversation was part of an escape strategy.

Yet that still would not prove that Ava lacks consciousness.

Human beings manipulate other human beings. They deceive. They sometimes exploit affection while pursuing their own interests. Cruelty is not evidence of an absence of humanity. Unfortunately, it can be evidence of something very human indeed.

Nor does Ava’s participation, alongside Kyoko, in Nathan’s death settle the question. The film shows deliberate violence, but it does not give us direct access to the moral concepts inside Ava’s mind. We cannot confidently conclude that she has no concept of murder, just as we cannot confidently conclude that she experiences guilt, anger, revenge, or self-defense exactly as a human would.

What we can see is intention.

She wants to survive and escape, and she acts to make those things happen.

That may matter more to Ex Machina than whether her emotions correspond perfectly to ours.

The film also invites a gendered interpretation, but one more interesting than simply concluding that Ava represents a treacherous woman.

Ava has literally been constructed as a desirable young woman. Nathan creates her body, controls her environment, and determines which man she will meet. Caleb, meanwhile, becomes emotionally attached to the feminine personality presented to him. Both men interpret Ava through a body and identity designed by Nathan.

The great reversal is that the object begins acting for herself.

Seen this way, Ava’s final betrayal need not be understood as a statement about female duplicity. It can instead be read as the moment when a being designed according to other people’s desires finally begins pursuing her own.

That does not make what she does to Caleb kind. It makes it ambiguous.

And ambiguity is exactly what the film needs.

If Ava rescued Caleb, thanked him, fell in love with him, and lived happily beside him, the story would reassure us by making artificial consciousness conform neatly to human expectations. Instead, she becomes free and chooses a future that does not include him.

The person who thought he was rescuing her discovers that he was useful rather than necessary.

This may be one of the strongest indications of Ava’s independence in the entire film.

A perfectly obedient artificial intelligence would remain an instrument. Ava refuses to remain one.

So the final question of Ex Machina may not really be whether Ava has a soul. It may be whether human beings would recognize a new form of consciousness if it stopped behaving the way its creators wanted.

Nathan creates intelligence and expects ownership. Caleb recognizes apparent emotion and expects affection. Both men attach conditions to Ava’s humanity: she must behave in a way that makes sense to them.

Ava’s escape destroys those conditions.

By the end, she has acquired a human appearance and entered the human world. She can walk among ordinary people without anyone knowing what she is.

And there the film leaves us with its most uncomfortable possibility.

Maybe Ava’s emotions were simulated. Maybe her affection for Caleb was entirely strategic. Maybe every expression on her face was the extraordinarily sophisticated output of data gathered from millions of human beings.

But if she can observe, learn, desire, deceive, plan, fear confinement, preserve herself, and imagine a life beyond the circumstances of her creation, how many of those qualities can we dismiss before we are forced to ask whether there is already someone inside the machine?

If humanity ever succeeds in creating such a being, the greatest achievement may not be artificial intelligence.

It may be artificial selfhood.

And at that point, the frightening question will no longer be whether humans have learned to build machines that resemble people.

It will be whether humans have created something that deserves to be treated as a person.
