Bedtime Stories brings Walt Disney Pictures and Adam Sandler together. Disney’s family-friendly fantasy meets Sandler’s familiar style of comedy, and that pairing alone makes it interesting to see how the two styles will work together.
Skeeter, a hotel employee, begins telling bedtime stories to his niece and nephew. Before long, the children’s wild additions to those stories start coming true in his own life the following day. At first, it seems like a coincidence, but his everyday world gradually begins moving in stranger and less predictable directions. Skeeter tries to use this unusual power to his advantage, only to discover that the stories do not unfold exactly as he wants.
A world that follows children’s stories—well, maybe it is not entirely impossible. Stories may not magically turn into reality word for word, but they can change the way children and adults think. Those changes can eventually shape their choices and even the way they live. Beneath its light and playful premise, the film also invites us to consider how the stories we tell and believe might influence the world around us.
